Home of Pittsburg State Volleyball
Pittsburg State University plays its home volleyball matches at John Lance Arena, recognized as one of the finest venues among the NCAA Division II membership.
Through the efforts of Coach Suberu and his staff, John Lance Arena has evolved into a strong home court presence the past four seasons. The Gorillas have led the MIAA five of the last seven years and ranked among the NCAA Division II Top 20 in home attendance each season. In 2001, PSU ranked 13th nationally, averaging 370 fans per match. In 2002, that figure ballooned to 515 fans per home match, good for sixth among the NCAA-II membership.
In 2003, Pittsburg State averaged 717 fans per match to rank third among all NCAA-II institutions. That figure included a record-setting crowd of 2,246 fans that witnessed PSU's thrilling 3-2 win over Missouri Southern on Sept. 18, 2003. The crowd that night established a new MIAA attendance record, while becoming the seventh-largest crowd at a regular season match in NCAA Division II history.
In 2004, the Gorillas once again ranked third nationally in attendance, averaging a conference-best 648 fans per match. In 2005, Pitt State averaged 499 fans per match to remain among the top 20 programs. In 2006 Gorilla volleyball attendance jumped to 629 fans per game to rank fourth nationally. In 2007, that figure climbed again to 659 fans per game to rank fourth once again.
An added feature of John Lance Arena is its Sport Court surface. The flooring retrofits and suspends over the existing hardwood floor in the arena to create a playing surface of red and gold borders. Sport Court is the court of choice for the USA Volleyball national governing body and is the court of choice for top NCAA Division I and Division II programs across the country.
PSU has compiled a 163-169-3 (.491) record at John Lance Arena since the Gorillas began play during the 1974 season. PSU won its inaugural home volleyball match, defeating Evangel College (2-0) on Oct. 15, 1974. The Gorillas celebrated their 100th all-time home win by defeating Emporia State University (3-2) on Sept. 19, 1997.
John Lance Arena is named in honor of legendary coach John Lance, who coached the PSU basketball team from 1922-63. Lance won 582 games during his illustrious 40-year career at Pittsburg State.
